Arlene Thompson Mathis, 88, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, at Providence Pointe Healthcare in Paducah, Kentucky.
Born on February 2, 1937, in Melber, Kentucky to the late Robert Marion and Evylene Mitchell Thompson. Arlene had many passions; she was an avid gardener, and her garden was a testament to her patience and dedication, bursting with the vibrant colors of her beloved flowers. Travel was another of Arlene's lifelong passions. She believed that to travel was to embrace the beauty, diversity, and wonder of the world. Those who traveled alongside Arlene spoke of her enthusiasm and the sparkling curiosity that brightened her every step. Above all, Arlene's heart belonged to her family. A loving mother and caring grandmother, she showered her children and grandchildren with affection and wisdom. Her love was a guiding force, unwavering and unconditional.
Arlene is survived by two daughters, Pam (Gary) Miller of Paducah, Kentucky and Gina (Murray) Raetz of Casa Grande, Arizona; two sons, Chris (Rene) Mathis and Clay Mathis both of Melber, Kentucky; nine grandchildren, Shannon (Brent) Smith, Ryan (Brittany) Miller, Blake Raetz, Krysten (Jacob) Hamm, Alex Mathis, Drake (Amelia) Mathis, Haley (Byron) Taylor, Megan (Blake) Eckelberry, and Maddison “Maddie” Mathis; seven great grandchildren, Jude Smith, Noah Smith, Tildie Miller, Mackenzie Jones, Travis Mathis, Conner Mathis, and Autumn Taylor; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 74 years, Allen Mathis; a brother, Lanny Thompson; and her parents.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home with Daniel Farris and Jerome Frandle officiating. Burial will follow at Owens Chapel Cemetery in Melber, Kentucky.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the service hour of 1:00 PM on Friday, January 23, 2026, at the Lone Oak Chapel of Milner & Orr Funeral Home.
