Gene Carolyn Paul Dowdy, affectionately known as Carolyn to her many friends and loved ones, passed away on October 30, 2025, at the age of 90. Carolyn drew her first breath on July 17, 1935, in Graves County, Kentucky, and grew to be an embodiment of compassion, dedication, and patriotic pride throughout her remarkable life.

Following her graduation as a registered nurse from St. Joseph's University in 1957, Carolyn's career spanned over five decades. Her early years at Fuller-Gilliam Hospital and Community Hospital in Mayfield, Kentucky, exemplified her unwavering commitment to healing and caring for others. In 1985, Carolyn took her caring hands to Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, where she served until her retirement in 2012. Her work was not just a profession but a calling, as she often volunteered to work on holidays, ensuring her colleagues could spend cherished time with their families.

Deeply rooted in her Christian faith, Carolyn was a pillar of the St. John Catholic Church community, actively participating in church events and contributing to its growth. Her spiritual journey was enriched by regular retreats to Mt. St. Joseph in Owensboro, a testament to her devotion to nurturing her inner life and that of others.

Carolyn’s passion extended beyond her immediate environment as she touched lives in the crisis psychological unit, bringing light to those in their darkest moments. Her colleagues and patients often referred to her as a "walking savior," a title she humbly bore by always being there for those in need.

Her sharp mental acuity was a distinct aspect of Carolyn's character, remaining with her until her final days. She was a fervent patriot and a proud descendant of Scottish heritage, aspects that imbued her with a robust sense of identity and community.

Carolyn is survived by four grandchildren, Daniel McGary of Paducah, Kentucky, Eva Moore (Dan) Bergman of Colorado, Amanda Moore (Michael) Curry of Mayfield, Kentucky, and Mary Coleman of Indianapolis, Indiana; four great-grandchildren, Deklyn McGary, Hailee Forrest, Grady Forrest, and David Forrest; and her pug and best friend, Duke.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charlie Paul, who served faithfully in World War II; her mother, Nora McAlpin Paul; her daughter, Carolyn McGary; her sister, Jo Paul Strong; and her first husband and good friend, H.G. McGary, Jr.
