James Joseph Carbonel, 96, of Paducah, Kentucky, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026. Born in Newark, New Jersey, James lived a remarkable life defined by faith, service, courage, and dedication to his country and family.
A devout Catholic, James was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Paducah, where his faith remained an important part of his life.
James proudly served his country for 22 years in the United States Army, dedicating much of his life to the defense of our nation. During his distinguished military career, he served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, making him a veteran of three wars.
His service included completing basic training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Followed by service in the 11th Airborne Division 1946-1949(Japan), the 82nd Airborne Division 1949-1950, 4th Airborne Ranger Company 1950-1951(Korea), 2nd Infantry Division 1951-1952 (Korea), 187th ARCT. 1952-1954(Japan and Korea), 508th ARCT. 1955-1956 (U.S. and Japan), 101st Airborne Division; 1966-1967, 1st Air Cavalry Division (ABN) 1966-1967. He retired honorably in 1968. Among his many military accomplishments, James received the Bronze Star for exhibiting bravery and meritorious service. His commitment to the Army and his fellow soldiers reflected the courage, discipline, and sense of duty that defined his life.
After more than two decades of military service, James worked locally in Paducah for the U.S Postal Service, from which he retired. James will be remembered for his dedication to his country, his Catholic faith, and the people whose lives he touched throughout his 96 years.
James is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Velda Dublin Carbonel of Paducah, Kentucky; a daughter, Jackie (Jamie) England of West Paducah, Kentucky; a son, Patrick Carbonel of Paducah, Kentucky; two grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rita Dimacale of Millville, New Jersey and, Irene Trethan of Williamstown, New Jersey; a brother, Ralph Carbonel of Hodgenville, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Carbonel; his parents, Ireneo Carbonel and Loretta Gallagher Carbonel; two sisters; and two brothers.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 PM on Thursday, August 13, 2026, at Maplelawn Park Cemetery, with Rev. Stephen Than officiating.
