Mary Helen Hook passed away on August 31, 2026, at Ray and Kay Eckstein Hospice Care Center in Paducah, Kentucky, at the age of 78, surrounded by family.
Mary was born on June 28, 1948, in Sacramento, Kentucky. She lived a life marked by faith, service, and steadfast commitment to her family, her students, and her community. She earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Murray State University, which portrayed both her love of learning and her dedication to helping others grow through education.
Mary devoted much of her professional life to teaching seventh-grade science at Lone Oak Middle School, where she served for more than 27 years.
In addition to her long career at Lone Oak Middle School, Mary also spent 10 years as a substitute teacher working with special-needs children. This work reflected her compassion and her willingness to meet children where they were. She approached each child with kindness and respect, offering support and encouragement in ways that made a lasting difference.
Mary’s life was also deeply rooted in faith. She attended Mount Zion Baptist Church for 58 years, where she found fellowship, strength, and a sense of belonging. Her church family was an important part of her life.
One of Mary’s greatest joys was gardening, and she was truly a master at it. She earned her Master Gardener certification, a distinction she was quietly proud of. She loved tending to her flowers and plants, and her garden was a reflection of her patience, care, and appreciation for beauty.
Above all else, Mary cherished her family. She shared a loving marriage of 58 years with her husband, and their life together stood as a lasting example of devotion and partnership. She treasured her children and grandchildren and took great pride in the bond they shared. Her family was the center of her heart.
Mary is survived by her husband, Alan Hook, of Paducah, Kentucky; two sons, Rodney (Christina) Hook of New York, New York, and Patrick (Teena) Hook of Paducah, Kentucky; a sister, Marjorie (Cleetis) Noffsinger of Richmond, Kentucky, and a brother, Hobert J. ”Hobie” (Betty) Whitmer of Sacramento, Kentucky; five grandchildren: Lucy, Alice, Mabel, Miles, and Mazzy; and several nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Hobert J. Whitmer and Margaret Allison Whitmer.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah, with Bro. Jason Medley officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until the service hour of 1:00 PM on Friday, September 4, 2026, at Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah.
