Nelda Lucille DeWeese, born on February 20, 1932, passed away on March 1, 2024, at the Calvert City Convalescent Center in Calvert City, Ky after a brief illness.
Born to the late Aubrey and Wilma Dunkerson in Burna, Ky, Nelda married her late husband Jewell Lee DeWeese, Jr. on November 4, 1951, and moved to Grand Rivers, Ky where she helped his family run the family grocery. Eventually she and Jay became the owners of DeWeese IGA Foodliner for over 50 years.
She was a resident of Grand Rivers for many years and was a faithful member of the Grand Rivers Baptist Church where she served in numerous roles.
She is survived by two sons, Jeff DeWeese (Emily) of Grand Rivers, and Art DeWeese (Debbie) of Pelham, AL; three grandchildren, Tiffany Reed (Jeremy) of Gilbertsville, Ky, Nicole Helm (Derrick) of Birmingham, AL, and David DeWeese of Grand Rivers, and five great-grandchildren, Isabella, Ainslee, and Josiah Helm of Birmingham and Maddie and Hudson Reed of Gilbertsville.
Additionally, she is survived by two siblings, Velva Jacobs of Ledbetter, Ky, and Gary Dunkerson (Brenda) of Salem, Ky, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, GV Dunkerson and two sisters, Mary Croft and Sandra Porter.
Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on April 6 in Dixon Cemetery in Grand Rivers with Rev. Mark Gill officiating. A memorial service will follow at Grand Rivers Baptist Church at 11:00a.m.. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Nelda to the Grand Rivers Baptist Church, P.O. Box 235, 1699 JH O’Bryan Avenue, Grand Rivers, KY. 42045.
