Clyde Sylvester Carrethers, a beloved figure in his community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully at his residence in Brookport, IL, on Thursday, December 25, 2025. Born on March 7, 1938, in Brookport, Illinois, Clyde blossomed into a personality characterized by warmth, dedication, and a profound love for both family and various hobbies.
Clyde dedicated an impressive 38 years of his life working at Sears & Roebuck before retiring as an auto mechanic, a testament to his remarkable commitment and strong work ethic. Beyond his career, Clyde's true passions were rooted in the simple pleasures of life. An avid car enthusiast, he dedicated countless hours to working on and caring for vehicles, a hobby that brought him immense joy. He was often seen with a fishing rod in hand, enjoying the tranquility of nature, and his living room resonated with the excitement of basketball, especially when cheering for the Chicago Bulls.
His home was a reflection of his meticulous nature, boasting a well-manicured lawn that served as a testament to his dedication and love of beauty. Clyde had an eye for collecting coins, a hobby that added to his rich tapestry of interests and highlights.
Clyde is survived by a loving family who will forever cherish his memory. His Son, Lamont Thomas of Madison, Wisconsin, along with His Two Daughters, Charmaine (Melvin) Hampton of Round Lake Beach, Illinois, and Sheila Carrethers of Racine, Wisconsin, hold dear the invaluable lessons and love he instilled in them. He will also be greatly missed by His Grandson, Jhamaal Garrett of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Several Grandchildren Including the Daughters of Lamont, Chauntel and Sharonda Thomas, as well as Cherished Great-Grandchildren, including Josiah Garrett. Clyde’s family tree extends with Several Nieces and Nephews, all of whom have been touched by his nurturing spirit. Special Cousins, Cindy Broderdorp of Metropolis, Illinois, and Wanda Jorden, alongside Special Nephew, Wilbert Reid of Brookport, Illinois, and Special Niece, Wilma Grubbs of Paducah, Kentucky, also feel the void left by his departure. Close Friends, Jim and Joanie Klankey, and Lamont Jones of Brookport, Illinois, round out the cherished circle of Clyde's life, each sharing fond memories and laughter.
He is reunited in spirit with his parents, Hue Carrethers and Erma Senter Carrethers, and his significant other of 44 years, Wanda F. Smith. Clyde's sister, Colleen Mae Hardy, joins him in eternal rest while their special bond with Wanda Jorden continues to echo through the hearts of those who remember them.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Pettus-Rowland Funeral Home beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at 12:00 Noon. Friends and family are invited to honor Clyde’s life and legacy, reflecting on a man whose presence was as steadfast as the ideals of dedication and love that he held dear. His life was a testament to the beauty of connection, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
