Daniel Jamar Shannon, a beloved son, brother, coach, and friend, passed away on May 21, 2026, at Baptist Health Hospital of Paducah. Born on July 31, 1984, in Paducah, Kentucky, Daniel lived a life marked by passion, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family and community.
Daniel was a 2003 graduate of Massac County High School and attended Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, Illinois, where he played football. Daniel was baptized at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Brookport, Illinois.
Those who knew Daniel described him as someone who never met a stranger, a man tough in spirit, yet tender in heart. His presence was both commanding and warm, marked by a fierce love for those he held dear. He was known for hollering the loudest at his son Brody's games, his passionate encouragement echoing from the sidelines as a testament to his pride and devotion. A self-proclaimed "mama’s baby," Daniel shared an unbreakable bond with his mother, Felicia Shannon Cummings of Brookport, Illinois.
Daniel’s love for sports was a defining element of his life. Football was his passion, but he adored skiing, hiking, golfing, and snowboarding. As a coach for the Riverhawk’s football organization and a personal trainer, he inspired many young athletes, instilling in them the values of discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. His guidance extended beyond the field, touching the lives of those he mentored.
Daniel is lovingly remembered by His Son, Brody Daniel Shannon of Paducah, KY; His Parents, Felicia Cummings and Daniel Matthews of Decatur, Illinois; his Stepfather TJ Cummings of Decatur, Illinois & Christopher Carruthers of Paducah, Kentucky, and His Siblings: Shayla Matthews of Atlanta, Georgia; Ja’Kee Curtley of Jeffersonville, Indiana; Shawntell Clemons of Texas; Martodius Matthews, Dantana Matthews, and Alexis Matthews, all of Decatur, Illinois; Darrian Carruthers and Charles Christopher Carruthers, both of Brookport, Illinois; and Tayrionna Cummings of Decatur, Illinois. He was the Cherished Grandson of Gloria Ann Shannon of Brookport, IL, and Ocie Dance of Paducah, KY.
His family circle also includes a Host of Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, and Friends who were touched deeply by his spirit, including Special Friends, Phil Goforth and Robert “Bob” Simmons, who stood by him through life’s shared joys and trials.
Daniel joins his sister Junisha Cummings, grandparents Willie Watson, Lester David Matthews, John Earl Dance, and Earnest L. Green, and great-grandparents Revie Shannon, Sr., Susie Shannon, and Louvenia Ray, who preceded him in death.
In remembering Daniel Jamar Shannon, we celebrate not just a life lived, but a soul who loved fiercely and left a lasting imprint on all who crossed his path. He was a beacon of strength and loyalty, a mentor, and above all, a devoted father whose greatest joy was his son.
