Elnora Jane George Stevenson, age 82, entered eternal rest at 11:01 a.m., Friday, January 26, 2024, from her residence here in Paducah.

Elnora gave herself to Jesus Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Harrison Street Baptist Church for over 50 years and was a member of the choir.

She attended West Paducah School and received certification as a Master Seamstress and Tailoring from West Kentucky Vocational Technical School where she majored in Business. She was also a 4H leader through the University of Kentucky Agriculture Department.

Elnora was employed by several businesses such as Normandy Factory where she upholstered seats for 18 wheelers, Charles Todd Uniforms, Florsheim Shoes, Finkle’s Department Store, Rosenfield Clothing Store, Marshalls Clothing Store, Mr. Penguin Tuxedo Shop, and Walmart Supercenter where she retired.

She was a great seamstress because she absolutely loved to sew. She often made her children’s clothes, and they modeled her fashions. Because she took great pride in her work, no one could tell it didn’t come from a department store. She was highly sought after by many for alterations even after she retired. She could hem pants with the quickness, take legs in on pants, sew in zippers, and sew on patches. She did it all! Her children and grandchildren were always asking her to alter something. She still has that old sewing machine in her home today, and some of her grandchildren have picked up the sewing “bug.”

She was an avid Bingo player. If you called her on the phone, she would say, “I am getting ready to go to Bingo. I’ll call you back.” She would forget and a few days later, you would have to call her. Everyone knew the days and times not to call her. She would play several Bingo sheets at a time, and you had better not mess with her sheets. She didn’t play about her Bingo. She was always telling us, “I hit; I hit!” with the biggest grin on her face.

She loved cooking for her family. Everyone always wanted her cake and sauce, her sweet potato pies that we would hide from others, fried apple pies and her potato salad.

Her home was always the first stop for everyone both when they arrived in Paducah and the first stop when they departed from Paducah. She was our hum – our matriarch – our queen!

Elnora was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Susan Rozelle (Woods) George; a son, Marcia “Marshall” Laverne George; brothers, John R. George, Charles E. George, Sr., William L. George, Joe George, and Alfred Lee Woods; sisters, Mattie C. Woods and Rosa M. Nance; Great Grandson, Malcolm Hensley; and Great-Great Grandson, Messiah Hensley.
