Mrs. Mable “Virginia” Chester, age 101, of Murray, Kentucky, departed her earthly home to spend eternity with her Heavenly Father on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Hickory Woods.
Virginia was born in Marshall County, Kentucky on September 24, 1924, to the late Homer and Opal (Crick) Ross. After she married Otto Wilson Chester on December 28, 1940, they moved to Highland Park, Michigan for two years where two children, Rachel and Bobby were born. In 1943 they moved to the Lynn Grove Community to begin farming. Two additional children were born there, Dennis and Garry. Virginia stayed busy as a homemaker: gardening, canning, helping with the family farm work and caring for her children. She joined Salem Baptist Church where she remained a member for the remainder of her life. She was an active member until her health prevented her attendance. Virginia was a janitor of the church for ten years beginning in her eighties. In 1961 Virgina and Otto moved to Lynn Grove where she could relax a bit, with only the garden to keep her busy. She soon became the Clerk for Otto’s Auction Sales. She and Otto also traveled the United States for many years.
One son, Bobby, died in February of 1995, Otto died in December of 1996, and another son Dennis died in June of 2026. After their passing, Virginia moved closer to her daughter. In 2014 she and Rachel moved to Murray. Preceding Virgina in death were her parents, husband, two sons, one brother, and two sisters-in-law.
She is survived by a daughter, Rachel Wicker of Murray, Kentucky; one son, Garry Chester of Dexter, Kentucky ; one brother, Toy Ross of Murray, Kentucky; seven grandchildren, Randy Neale of Almo, Kentucky, Jason Neale (Ryan) of Switzerland, Gayle Malone of Lebanon, Tennessee, Tammy Love of Murray, Kentucky, Elli Chester of Mayfield, Kentucky, Scott Chester (Samantha) of Calvert City, Kentucky, and Stacy Sterns of Nashville, Tennessee; as well as 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, August 13, 2026, at the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery with Bro. Philip Bazzell officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the J.H. Churchill Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
