The Beechwood Tigers held off the Mayfield Cardinals 14-13 in a hard-fought defensive battle at windy Kroger Field in Lexington to lay claim to the Class 2A state title on Friday.

Neither team scored until Beechwood drew first blood with a touchdown at the 8:21 mark in the second quarter. An interception gave Beechwood the ball back on Mayfield's next possession, but the Tigers missed a field goal, and the first half came to an end with Mayfield trailing 7-0.

Mayfield got on the board early in the third quarter as Jutarious Starks had a 15-yard run to tie the game at the 9:02 mark.

Beechwood broke the tie as the fourth quarter started on a 10-yard run for a 14-7 lead. With time running out,  Beechwood fumbled to give Mayfield new life. The Cardinals were able to score with just 1:13 remaining in the game, but the PAT attempt hit the upright to stay 14-13.

Beechwood recovered the onside kick attempt and was able to run out the clock for their 17th state championship in school history.

Before Friday's game, Beechwood was presented a plaque for their contributions last year to the western Kentucky tornado relief effort. Two weeks after the same two teams played in the state semifinals, Beechwood sent five semi trucks full of supplies to Mayfield after the devastating tornado.
