The Mayfield Cardinals won their 13th-ever state football championship on Friday when they outlasted undefeated and top-ranked Owensboro Catholic 53-48.
It was the second-highest scoring championship game in state history, including 14 touchdowns between the two teams. Mayfield (13-1) got on the board on the ground, in the air, and with a kickoff return and two field goals. But it also took the defense to come up with a fumble recovery and a key fourth-down stop to hold off the Aces (14-1).
It was the Cardinals’ first title since 2015. They were winless in four previous finals played at Kroger Field.
