Thursday, June 19th marks the Juneteenth holiday - the day Union soldiers brought the news of freedom to enslaved Black people in Texas.

The holiday is officially observed in Paducah with the closure of government offices and the suspension of services like garbage pickup. Banks and other businesses may have adjusted hours as well. The Noble Park Pool is open, Thursday, from Noon to 7 p.m. However several of the larger events commemorating the day will run through the weekend.

Friday night there will be a Concert on the Lawn at the National Quilt Museum. Live music, food trucks, complimentary soft drinks, and ice cream, plus cocktails on the Broussard's patio will highlight the night from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Then on Sunday, Sundaze in the Park will take place at Robert Coleman Park from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Music, food, and games will be on the menu for that event.

Juneteenth became more widely celebrated after former President Joe Biden designated it a federal holiday in 2021. It is recognized at least as an observance in every state, and nearly 30 states and Washington, D.C., have designated it as a permanent paid or legal holiday through legislation or executive action.
