Cape Girardeau’s City Council decided to move forward with a proposal to change the air carrier service at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport.
During a meeting on Wednesday, the council voted unanimously to recommend a proposal from American Airlines.
It includes the use of 65-passenger jets to make six round-trip flights to Dallas-Fort Worth and six round-trip flights to Chicago O’Hare per week.
Cape's current contract with Contour Airlines expires in October.
The U.S. Department of Transportation must approve the switch between air carrier services, because the flights are subsidized under the government's Essential Air Service program.
Airports in Paducah, Owensboro and Marion, Illinois are also served by commercial airlines through the EAS program.
