Trigg County Sheriff Aaron Acree is urging local businesses to be careful after several reports of counterfeit bills being passed in the community recently.

WKDZ reports that Acree says the Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating multiple complaints that involve counterfeit money, and they have already notified federal authorities, as required.

The cases are said to primarily involve counterfeit $50 and $100 bills being used at local businesses.

The Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the United States Secret Service, the federal agency responsible for investigating counterfeit currency and other financial crimes.

Acree says business owners and employees can play an important role in helping identify fraudulent bills before they enter circulation.

He also recommends requesting identification when appropriate, and maintaining detailed records of transactions involving larger bills.

Acree went on to explain that such simple precautions can provide valuable evidence if a prosecution becomes necessary.

While the amount of counterfeit currency reported so far has been relatively limited, he says the trend is concerning enough for a public warning.

This comes a week after the Dawson Springs Police Department began investigating reports involving counterfeit $20 bills.

Police said in a social media post that they recovered several counterfeit $20 bills from three local businesses during their investigation.

According to police, the counterfeit $20 bills have the word “REPLICA” printed in three places on the front.
