After setting records earlier this year for rainfall, then for extreme heat, the National Weather Service office in Paducah says we now have a chance to set a new mark for cool, dry conditions.
A pattern change this week will bring below normal highs ranging from the mid 70s to the low 80s. Paducah's historical average high for the end of August is 88 degrees.
If the forecast bears out, parts of our region could experience the longest stretch of sub-80 degree temperatures in the last 12 years. Paducah hasn`t observed 2 straight days with highs below 80 in the month of August since 2013.
The cool air is combined with some of the lowest humidity values the weather service has ever recorded for this time of year.
Some record lows could also be possible in spots this week, especially on Wednesday morning. Paducah's 80-year-old record for Wednesday is 52.
If the current forecast holds and we witness 6 consecutive days with lows falling below 60 degrees, it would be only the 3rd time on record in the month of August, and the first time since 2004.
The only small chance for showers this week will occur on Thursday.
