McCracken County Clerk Julie Griggs is retiring after serving 34 years in the Clerk's Office.
Griggs was elected in 2014, but has spent 34 years in total working in the County Clerk's Office.
Griggs told the Greg Dunker Show that during her time in office, having to manage a primary and a general election during a pandemic proved one of the biggest challenges.
"Just the way we had to conduct the elections. The courthouse was closed a lot of the time to the public. Mailing out all those absentee ballots--16,000--it was just something that none of us had ever gone through before."
Griggs said some good things came out of the pandemic, though. She cited the consolidation of voting precincts, having a central voting location at the courthouse for anyone in the county, and no excuse early voting
Dunker asked Griggs what the best part of the job has been.
"When people have asked me that, I said I know it sounds so cliché, but I love helping people. And when you're in public service, there's a lot of that!"
The County Clerk's Office is responsible, not only for running elections, but also registering voters, registering vehicles, real estate documentation, collecting delinquent real estate taxes, and issuing marriage licenses.
Jamie Huskey will fill the remainder of Griggs' term. Huskey has been in the Clerks office for about 27 years. Griggs believes the transition will be seamless.
