June, July log staggering rainfall totals across the region

The meteorologists at the National Weather Service office in Paducah keep pulling some amazing numbers out of the data they've collected this summer, including many spots in the region that have seen more than double the usual amounts of rainfall.

From June 1 to August 1, the usual local rain total is 7.5 to 9 inches. But this summer, weather service observation stations in all four of the quad states have collected more than 20 inches in just the past two months.

Top of the list is Pulaski County, Illinois with an astounding 26.5 inches. Goreville, IL has seen 22.6 inches; Scott City Missouri 22.4; the Smithland Lock and Dam in Pope County, IL caught 22.1; and Pike County, Indiana rounds out the top five at 21.8 inches.

Ballard County Kentucky is close behind with 21.6 inches of rain northwest of Kevil; Metropolis, IL tied with Kevil at 21.6; Lyon County has had 20.7 inches near Kuttawa; Owensboro KY recorded 20.6 and Calvert City KY completes the top ten with 20.3 inches of rain.

Honorable mention goes to Marion, KY with 18.3 inches; Murray with 17.9; Barkley Airport with 17.3 and Mayfield with 17.1 inches.

During this period, Paducah recorded its 10th-wettest June and 6th-wettest July ever. Cape Girardeau notched its 2nd-wettest June ever, and its 3rd-wettest July. Evansville has also logged its 2nd-wettest June ever.

Cape Girardeau needs just another .15 inches of rain to make this summer its wettest in history.
