A man was pulled from the Ohio River early Thursday morning at the Cave In Rock Ferry Landing in Crittenden County after he accidentally drove off the ferry ramp.

The Crittenden Press reported that first responders arrived about 1 a.m., after a resident in Cave In Rock, Illinois heard screams for help coming from the Kentucky side of the river. The ferry, which stops operation at 10pm, was put back into service and crossed the Ohio to rescue the man from his car, which was about 20 feet from shore.

The Crittenden County Rescue Squad was called in by 2 a.m. to help recover the car. Ferry owner Lonnie Lewis used a large track hoe to pull the car from the river.

The driver, from Evansville, told authorities that he was unfamiliar with KY 91, the state highway which ends at the ferry landing.
