A disturbance in Mayfield Saturday ended with the arrest of a Tennessee man after he allegedly threw roofing nails all over a Graves County roadway.

Deputies were called around 9:45pm to an address on Randview Drive where caller said her ex-husband was at her residence and would not leave. A deputy responding to the call was traveling on South Sutton Lane and said he came up on two to three sections of the road that had a large amount of roofing nails scattered on it.

The deputy tried to remove as many nails to proceed to the call but was injured when a nail pierced his shoe and became lodged in his foot.

Other deputies mafe it to the caller's home where they learned her ex-husband, 61-year-old Jefferey W. Ashley had fled before they arrived. The caller told deputies Ashley had told her he was going to throw nails in her driveway so they would damage her tires when she left. The caller said she told Ashley she called law enforcement and Ashley allegedly said he had thrown nails all over the road and hoped police ran over them.

Deputies responding to the area found Ashley’s vehicle traveling on Interstate 69 near the 21-mile marker. They stopped Ashley and said he was under the influence. Deputies searched the vehicle and allegedly found methamphetamine and marijuana. Ashley reportedly admitted to deputies he intentionally threw the roofing nails onto the roadway on South Sutton Lane.

Ashley was arrested and charged with wanton endangerment, criminal mischief, and criminal littering along with DUI and drug charges.

The injured deputy was treated and released from the hospital.
