A steel company has announced it will build a $1.35 billion mill in rural Meade County, choosing that location over one in McCracken County.
Nucor Corp. said Wednesday it will build the new steel plate facility at Brandenburg, about 45 miles southwest of Louisville, and the project is expected to create 400 jobs. The company says the average salary will be about $72,000 per year.
The announcement came shortly after Kentucky economic development officials approved about $40 million in state incentives for Nucor.
Glen Anderson with Greater Paducah Area Economic Development said in a press release that Paducah and Brandenburg were the two finalists for the mill. He said they worked hard to sell Paducah to Nucor, but they are still grateful that the mill will bring jobs to Kentucky.
Anderson said, "The company chose to locate in Brandenburg, KY over our location due to the dimensions of their site and the needs of the plant."
He added, "Our relationship with the State is stronger than ever and the Cabinet has been a key partner in aligning this and other active prospects with our organization. We are excited to share that other active opportunities remain in play for our region, and this site in particular."
