The Murray Police Department has some new body armor courtesy of a grant program created and administered by the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office.
The hard body armor is light enough for everyday use, but also provides protection from the threat of a rifle.
Murray Police Chief Samuel Bierds said, “I am very pleased to be able to provide additional protection for the men and women who keep our community safe. We are very thankful to Attorney General Coleman and his office for this grant program.”
Attorney General Russell Coleman created the program after discovering that nearly 20 percent of Kentucky’s law enforcement officers had body armor that was expired or had no body armor at all. At the request of the Attorney General’s Office, the General Assembly allocated $15 million to equip officers.
To date, nearly 2,000 Kentucky law enforcement officers have received body armor through the program.
