The Paducah Board of Commissioners met in a special call meeting Tuesday night at the National Quilt Museum.

Commissioners approved a municipal order applying for a FEMA SAFER grant in the amount of $760,140 to be used to hire three additional firemen for the Paducah fire department for the next three years.

Fire chief Steve Kyle said the grant is needed to hire the firemen due to a shortage in the department.

The commissioners also approved a municipal order to apply to the Mellon Foundation for a $1.34 million grant for the Uppertown Heritage Foundation to be used for capital improvements for the Hotel Metropolitan and the Purple Room.

A measure was also approved to sell surplus property owned by the city at 815 South 5th Street for $1 to Black Owl Home Builders LLC.  Black Owl plans to construct an energy efficient three bedroom, two bath home on the lot at a cost of $200,000.  Construction would take about a year.
