Illinois residents went to the polls Tuesday for primary elections, including a few local races in southern Illinois.

Republican nominations were determined for a pair of newly drawn State House districts.

In the 117th district, the incumbent Patrick Windhorst of Metropolis easily held off challenger Ron Ellis. Windhorst took 72 percent of the vote. Windhorst has no Democratic opponent on the November ballot.

Incumbent Paul Jacobs was victorious over Aaron Smith by capturing 68 percent of the vote in the 118th district of southwestern Illinois.

In Massac County, there were only two contested primary races.

In the Republican primary for county treasurer, Sarah Bremer defeated incumbent Jody Haverkamp. Bremer won with 51 percent of the vote. Bremer garnered 875 votes to Haverkamp’s 823.

In the Republican primary for a county commissioner seat, Jimmy Burnham defeated Billy Max Reagor by a 2-to-1 margin. Burnham won with 68 percent of the vote. He collected 1,148 votes to Reagor’s 516.

There was just one contested race in Pope County. 

In the Republican primary for Pope County Clerk, Darci Garling defeated Erin English. Garling won with 454 votes to 343 for English. Garling got 57 percent of the vote.

In Alexander County, there were only a pair of contested primary races.

In the Democratic primary for Alexander County Clerk, the incumbent, Zachary Price defeated challenger Wytonia Orr. Price won with 73 percent of the vote. Price received 295 votes to 107 for Orr. 

In the Democratic primary for Alexander County Commission, Joe Griggs was the winner over Artie McBride by 18 percentage points. Griggs collected 220 votes to McBride's 154.

Voters in U.S. House District 12 went to the polls to choose a Democratic nominee to take on Republican Incumbent Mike Bost in the fall.

With 91 percent of precincts reporting, Homer Markel was leading Joshua Qualls by just over 2,200 votes. Markel had 56 percent of the vote.
