A fatal crash involving two tractor-trailers shut down a portion of Interstate 24 in Massac County on Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred about 2:30 a.m. on I-24 eastbound south the New Columbia/Big Bay exit around the  Rosebud Road overpass, near milepost 32.

Illinois State Police said a semi rear-ended the other semi, and the force of the crash caused both rigs to catch on fire.

Investigators said one driver was killed and the other driver was flown to an area hospital. No other information has been released.

I-24 eastbound was closed from Route 146 at Vienna to US 45 at Metropolis for several hours.

One lane of eastbound I-24 has since reopened around 9 a.m.
