More than 12 million Illinois residents are now connected to access to housing, food, healthcare, and other essential needs through 211 services.
Every Illinois resident can now dial 211 to connect to services that offer help getting basic needs such as housing, food, health care, and mental health services. 211 Illinois and the United Way of Illinois announced the completion of statewide coverage last week.
The three-digit number works as a free, confidential, 24/7 starting point for people who aren’t sure where to turn. Call specialists can help residents find local programs, check what services they may qualify for, and provide referrals. The help includes rent or utilities assistance, finding food pantries and nutrition programs, locating clinics, and connecting to counseling, crisis, and caregiver support.
211 Illinois serves as the state’s coordinating organization for the 211 system, setting service standards and working with partners to keep information current. The group works with the Illinois Department of Human Services to support the Illinois 211 Service Act and maintain a statewide network.
The statewide directory includes more than 35,000 verified resources.
Residents can reach the service by calling 211 or visiting 211illinois.org and selecting “Search for Help.”
2-1-1 is a nationwide, three-digit dialing code designated by the FCC in 2000, and originally pioneered by United Way in Atlanta in 1997. The system now covers 46 states. Illinois passed legislation beginning the 211 system in 2003.
