H.R. 1276, introduced by Congressman James Comer, (R-KY), which removed outdated National Park Service (NPS) restrictions on property owned by the City of Paducah, and clearing the way for local officials to transfer the property to the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club for renovation and facility improvements, was signed into law today by President Donald Trump.
The city had approached Congressman Comer's office requesting assistance with removing the NPS's role in the property, which includes the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club, and had been conveyed through the Federal Lands to Parks Program. However, before enactment of Congressman Comer's legislation, NPS maintained federal restrictions on the property.
The city of Paducah seeks to transfer the property to the Boys and Girls Club, which will allow the organization to renovate the building, including an updated gym and additional classrooms.
Congressman Comer worked with the City of Paducah, NPS, U.S. Army, and the House Committee on Natural Resources to advance the legislation.
In a statement, Congressman Comer said, "today is a major victory for the Oscar Cross Boys and Girls Club, and the entire McCracken County community. For more than sixty years, the club has provided generations of young people with opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed, but outdated federal restrictions have prevented the organization from improving its facilities and serving even more children. With President Trump's signature, we are cutting through federal red tape, empowering local leaders, and clearing the way for new classrooms, an updated gym, and other long awaited improvements. I thank President Trump for signing my legislation into law, and I am grateful to Senator Rand Paul, Senator Mitch McConnell, Mayor George Bray, and the many local leaders who worked with me to deliver this lasting investment in Kentucky's youth."
