Former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, 83, was set to report to federal prison Monday afternoon.
In June, the disgraced politician was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison. He must also pay a $2.5 million fine and will be required to serve three years probation.
Madigan was convicted in February of 10 counts of bribery, conspiracy, wire fraud and other charges in a mixed verdict.
Prosecutors argued Madigan ensured the approval of legislation favorable to utility company ComEd in exchange for kickbacks, jobs and contracts.
Earlier this month, a federal appeals court denied Madigan’s request to remain free while fighting his conviction.
Madigan, the longest-serving legislative leader in U.S. history, held the position of House speaker for nearly four decades. He left political office in 2021 while under investigation and was indicted the following year.
