Residents of Illinois will soon be able to have their ID on their phone, if the latest state legislation keeps moving forward. The state House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill Monday allowing people to use a digital copy of their driver’s license or state ID.
The bill is an initiative of Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias and the bill's sponsor, state Rep. Kam Buckner, D-Chicago.
Proponents say the technology already works in other states, including Louisiana.
The mobile ID would not replace someone’s physical ID card, but will complement it.
The bill now heads to the state Senate.
