Kentucky Waterways Alliance seeks help from voters to help secure funding for Ohio River restoration

The Kentucky Waterways Alliance is reminding Kentuckians of an important opportunity this week to seek federal funding  that will protect drinking water for the Ohio River Basin. 

The alliance notes that 97% of Kentucky's waterways drain to the Ohio River, so proposed legislation benefits all of Kentucky. The Ohio River Restoration Program Act allows Congress to invest up to $350M per year to clean up toxic pollution, restore fish and wildlife habitat, prevent and manage invasive species, and restore natural landscapes to prevent flooding. 

The legislation is modeled after the highly successful Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which boasts an economic return of $3 for every dollar spent on the plan.

The funding would go to projects in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. 

Kentucky Waterways Alliance members would like to see the bill included with other water bills in a U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee markup on Dec. 10. They want Kentuckians to contact every U.S. representative in the region to encourage them to co-sponsor the legislation by this Wednesday.
