Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams reported that during May, Republicans continued to increase their share of Kentucky voters; but voters in the “Other” category, including Independents, fell for the first time in over a year.

The last month that Republicans rose while Independents declined was in April 2020.

Net registration in the state rose by 104 in May, in spite of 4,633 voters being removed from the rolls: 3,883 who were deceased, 611 felony convicts, 64 adjudged mentally incompetent, 42 duplicate registrations, 25 who voluntarily de-registered and 8 who moved out of state.

Republican registration accounts for 48 percent of the electorate, with 1.61 million voters. Republican registration grew by 3,747 voters, a .23 percent increase.

Democratic registration made up 41 percent of the electorate, with 1.37 million voters. Democratic registration fell by 3,305, a .24 percent decrease.

There are 379,569 voters registered under other political affiliations (mostly independent), making up 11 percent of the electorate. “Other” registration declined by 338, a .09 percent decrease.

The 2025 decline in independents last year occurred when a purge removed over 230,000 voters of all political affiliations.

The registration deadline to be able to vote in the November General Election is Oct. 5.
