Two separate industrial accidents occurred at a southern Illinois coal mine on Saturday, one of which resulted in the death of a West Frankfort man.

According to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, 41 year-old Cameron Fourez was working underground at Hamilton County Coal around 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning when a supplemental roof support collapsed on top of him.

Fourez was transported to the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro where he was later pronounced deceased.

WFCN News reported that a statement from Hamilton County Coal said state and federal agencies have opened a full investigation into the incident.

Later on Saturday night, a fire occurred at a building at the same mine. Fire crews responded to the scene around 6:20 p.m. as smoke was seen coming from the building. Five employees who were in the building at the time were transported to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
