Two dead, five injured in Mt. Vernon shooting

A shooting early Sunday morning in Mt. Vernon left two people dead and five injured.

Mt. Vernon Police were called just before 1 a.m. about multiple shooting reports. Witnesses said that several dozen people had gathered before shooting broke out. Social media posts on Saturday mentioned a birthday gathering scheduled that night in the area.

First responders said they found several people at the scene had been shot and were in need of hospitalization.

Police said the victims were identified as 20-year-old Zomarrius Williams of Mt. Vernon and 26-year-old Demonta Woodward of Mounds.

Authorities arrested Jerria J. Smith, a 22-year-old woman from Mt. Vernon.
