When Paducah Tilghman Football begins its Class 4A title defense in August, there will be a new voice behind the microphone.
WKYX morning newsman and WestKentuckyStar.com News Director Brad Munson will take over the play-by-play duties for the Tornado when they take the field on August 22nd at McCracken County. Tilghman went 15-0 a season ago, collecting the fifth state football title in school history. Stepping into an established program and broadcast is no small challenge.
"No pressure," said Munson. "First off, there are big shoes to fill as my friend Brett Larimer has decided to step back from the schedule after 15 years. Then, to come into a Tornado program that just won a state title and has that type of tradition... It's an honor to get this call."
The rest of the football broadcast team will remain the same, as former Tilghman and University of Kentucky standout Richard Abraham will continue to co-anchor the coverage, and Dr. Johnny Myers will provide stats.
"I'm thrilled to have both of them in the booth. They will be tremendous assets as I look to shorten my learning curve in this new position. We will deliver the best possible broadcast, which is what this program deserves." Munson added, "I am enjoying getting to know Coach Thompson, the staff, and the players. It is going to be a fun season."
The games will all be broadcast on SuperTalk 94.3 WKYX-FM and online at westkentuckystar.com.
Munson slides into the play-by-play chair after four seasons of covering the Graves County Eagles basketball program as a color analyst.
"The learning curve in basketball will be a little easier having covered the First Region for four years after nearly a lifetime as an interested observer. I enjoyed my time on the Eagle broadcasts and have to thank Brian York for allowing me to tag along. However, some opportunities you can't pass on. Plus, with two new coaches on the basketball side, it will be a whole new outlook." Adding, "I'm excited about what Coach Dillard and Coach Davis will bring to Paducah Tilghman."
In the Spring, Munson will continue into his 4th season as the voice of the Livingston Central Lady Cardinal Softball program. The Lady Cardinals are coming off back-to-back All-A State Championships.
Munson has been in broadcasting for 30 years, having spent time on the air in Benton, Frankfort, and Lexington before landing in Paducah. He and his wife, Jill, have been married for 25 years and have four daughters — Katie, Elizabeth, Caroline, and Abby.
