The Kentucky Office of Highway Safety is teaming with law enforcement for the annual Click It or Ticket campaign.

The purpose of the campaign, funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, is to encourage drivers and their passengers to buckle up for safety.

THe KOHS said that 806 deaths occurred on Kentucky roads, last year, and of those, 333 were not wearing a seatbelt or were children not properly restrained.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Jim Gray said, “Sometimes even the most attentive drivers are involved in a crash caused by other drivers. Wearing a seat belt gives you the best chance of surviving a crash.”

NHTSA statistics suggest that front seat occupants in a car have the risk of death reduced by 45 percent with a properly worn seatbelt. Those in the front seats of minivans, trucks, and SUVs reduce the risk of death by 60 percent with a seatbelt.

Public service announcements featuring local law enforcement officers will air throughout Memorial Day weekend, encouraging motorists to buckle up.
