A combine caught fire Tuesday afternoon while working in a soybean field near the Hazel community.
Firefighters from Calloway County Fire-Rescue arrived at the intersection of Brandon Road and Pleasant Grove Road around 4:15 p.m. to find the combine fully engulfed in flames.
Fire officials posted that the fire was fueled by burning tires and onboard fuel, which made it extremely difficult to extinguish. The fire sent up a large column of black smoke, reportedly visible from nearly 15 miles away in the Kirksey community. Nine crew members worked for more than an hour, and used more than 6,000 gallons of water to control the blaze.
Officials said the fire was contained to the already harvested portion of the field, preventing damage to standing crops, and no injuries were reported.
