Now that the greatest two minutes in sports have passed with the running of the Kentucky Derby, attention across the state now turns to Kentucky’s most anticipated political gathering: the St. Jerome Fancy Farm Picnic.

The 146th annual picnic is always held on the first Saturday in August, so this year it will be on Aug. 1.

On Tuesday, Political Chairman Steven Elder announced that longtime broadcaster Dave Baker will serve as emcee for this year’s event.

“Dave brings professionalism, energy, and a deep love for Kentucky to the stage,” said Elder. “There’s no one better to help guide the day at the greatest political event in the state.”

Baker is a familiar voice across Kentucky, with a broadcasting career spanning more than four decades at WKYT-TV in Lexington. Since 1982, he has served as a sports anchor, reporter, and account executive, and currently works as Special Projects Coordinator. He regularly appears on WKYT’s news, sports, and special event coverage, and co-hosts Everyday Kentucky as well as The Afternoon Buzz, a live weekday program on WKYT+.

In 2022, Baker was honored with the Kentucky Broadcasters Association’s prestigious Golden Mic Award, marking his induction into the KBA Hall of Fame. He recently concluded his 37-season run as host of the University of Kentucky Sports Network’s Countdown to Tip-Off Show, a staple for Wildcat basketball fans statewide.

Beyond broadcasting, Baker has demonstrated a lifelong commitment to community service. He has been recognized by both the Kentucky House and Senate for his work with the Malt Beverage Education Corporation, promoting awareness about the dangers of underage drinking.

Baker currently serves as a trustee at Georgetown College and holds leadership roles with Baptist Health Lexington and Baptist Health Kentucky’s foundation efforts.

A graduate of Georgetown College and a member of the Franklin High School Hall of Fame in Ohio, Baker and his wife, Donna, are proud parents of six children and recently welcomed their first grandchild.

The St. Jerome Fancy Farm Picnic is nationally recognized as Kentucky’s premier political speaking event, drawing elected officials, candidates, and thousands of attendees each year for a day of spirited speeches, barbecue, and tradition.
