Murray police award commendation to man who thwarted knife attack at Goodwill store

On Monday, Murray police officers presented a commendation for bravery to William Mason, who acted to protect a co-worker who was being attacked with a knife at the Murray Goodwill store on April 21.

The commendation stated that Mason "selflessly placed himself in harm’s way in an effort to protect his co-worker from further injury" during the attack.  

While attempting to disarm the attacker, Mason was himself assaulted with a shovel and bitten by he attacker.  

Police stated that Mason’s "decisive and courageous actions directly contributed to stopping the assault, preventing further injury, and ultimately saving the victim’s life."

The commendation concluded, "His willingness to act in the face of immediate danger reflects exceptional bravery and a profound concern for the safety of others.  Mr. Mason is hereby commended by the Murray Police Department for his heroism, courage, and selfless actions.”

As a result of the investigation, 30-year-old Madison Hinchey of Murray was arrested and charged with attempted murder and assault.

The victim with the stab wound was airlifted to a regional medical facility.
