State Representative Chris Freeland of Benton was honored with the Friend of Kentucky Cities Award for his work during the most recent legislative session.
Freeland was given the award after working to help smaller cities streamline the audit process without bypassing the accountability to citizens. House Bill 555 was sponsored by Freeland and it was designed to help communities meet audit requirements for prompt financial reporting.
Kentucky League of Cities Government Affairs Director Gracie Kelly said, "Representative Freeland sponsored House Bill 555, a KLC initiative that helps smaller cities complete their annual audits by providing more flexibility in meeting audit requirements without reducing oversight or accountability. This legislation will solve a major issue for many cities, while still ensuring timely reporting, and review of public funds."
Freeland was given the award by Kelly, KLC President and Benton Mayor Rita Dotson along with Kuttawa Mayor Barbra Campbell and KLC Executive Director J.D. Chaney.
The award is given to legislators who take the lead on issues facing cities across the Commonwealth.
