A Kuttawa woman was scammed out of thousands of dollars by a phone hacker posing as a customer service representative.

The woman called the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday after she said a person claiming to be from Verizon called her. The victim had recently purchased a new phone and thought the call was related. The scammer sent a link to her phone, and when she clicked on it, the scammer took control of her phone remotely. She said the phone was placed in S.O.S. mode, so she could not regain control. The scammer used the banking app on her phone to transfer thousands of dollars out of her account.

Sheriff Brent White cautions people never to click on unverified links.
