More than three dozen earthquakes have been recorded in northwest Tennessee over the past six months.

According to KYTN, maps from the Center for Earthquake Research and Information shows over 40 tremors have been detected since July. Lake County had the highest number of recorded earthquakes at 34, with seven in Dyer County and two in Obion County.

The strongest recorded earthquake during the six-month period was 2.73 on November 9th. That quake was centered in northern Dyer County, near the Dyer-Obion County line.

The New Madrid Fault is America's most active seismic area east of the Rockies, with hundreds of small quakes annually and a significant risk for future large events that could impact cities like Memphis and St. Louis.

The most active portion of the fault runs from New Madrid, Missouri, south to Newbern, Tennessee.

The fault is known globally for historic massive earthquakes in 1811-1812 that reshaped the landscape and the Mississippi River, and rang church bells in Boston.
