A Lyon County man lost money in a Bitcoin computer scam last week.
The man called the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office after he said a pop-up message appeared on his screen telling him he had been hacked. The message included instructions to fix the problem, but that was a scam set up by individuals outside the United States. These scammers got the man to send them several thousand dollars in Bitcoin to help him fix his computer.
He lost all of the money.
Sheriff Brent White reminds everyone that if a person is trying to get you to send them money in the form of Bitcoin, digital currency, or gift cards, it is probably a scam. He also suggests changing the password on your internet router, which is how some scammers get access to your computer.
