Kentucky’s senior Senator Mitch McConnell made what he said was his 30th trip to the Fancy Farm Picnic in Graves County on Saturday.
McConnell received a warm reception from the heavily Republican crowd. He talked about the renewed excitement at the event, now that President Trump is back in the White House. McConnell noted that in his early days, he felt greatly outnumbered at the event, much like the handful of democrats in attendance. He took a shot at Democrats in Washington and Frankfort in one statement by saying that the Fancy Farm Picnic “outlasted Democrats’ control of Washington, and I’ll outlast a church closing Governor.”
Even with his occasional differences with Trump, McConnell praised the President for his strong presence on the world stage. He gave Trump credit for standing up to Russia, China, and Iran, turning their nuclear program “into a pile of rocks.” He also praised him for continuing to support the Ukrainians, calling it “the right call” and a way to restore peace through strength.
McConnell touted his work to help the President reshape the U.S. Supreme Court “for a generation.”
McConnell spoke about sticking up for Kentucky during his years in Washington by investing in Fort Campbell, keeping Paducah as a key part of national security, fighting for Kentucky coal, and helping Mayfield recover from the tornado.
Kentucky politics have changed dramatically during McConnell’s tenure in the Senate. Like him or not, his legacy is undeniable.
