As the remnants of Hurricane Beryl plowed through the area on Tuesday, a long-track supercell storm spawned a swarm of six tornadoes in northwest Kentucky and southern Indiana, including our region's largest ever July tornado.
Survey reports collected by the National Weather Service office in Paducah confirmed that an EF-3 tornado touched down east of Mt. Vernon, Indiana, and traveled almost six miles into Posey County. The estimated peak wind was 140 mph.
The worst damage occurred to the Kenco Logistics facility, where half of the roof was removed and large segments of the outer walls collapsed. Semi trailers and train cars were overturned. One manufactured home had its roof blown off and walls collapsed.
The supercell initially caused warnings north of Sturgis, Kentucky, and formed the first tornado in Union County near Grove Center. The EF-1 with winds of 105 mph cause roof damage to two homes. Several large trees were uprooted and snapped. Crops were severely damaged in the path of the tornado with large sections of corn flattened.
A second tornado in Union County began west of Uniontown to the River View Coal Mine. Along the path several large trees were uprooted and snapped with significant damage to crops.
That tornado lifted over the Ohio River, and crossed into Indiana where it touched down again east of Mt. Vernon.
The fourth tornado formed in Posey County near Springfield with 105 mph winds. A fifth touchdown went from Posey into Gibson County as an EF-2 with 120 mph winds, collapsing a barn, multiple farm buildings and a manufactured home.
The final brief tornado formed at Patoka with 100 mph winds, on the ground for one mile.
The path of Beryl's remnants also included 29 tornadoes in east Texas, and continued to spawn funnel clouds all the way to upstate New York.
