The Graves County Road Department recently reported that numerous stop signs and road signs lately have been stolen throughout the county.

Stealing official government signs is a crime, the department notes, but the consequences could be much greater. Missing stop signs and other road signs can delay first responders from getting to scenes quickly. In addition, missing signs can cause vehicle collisions for motorists driving on roadways, especially one with which they are not familiar.

Anyone in possession of any state, city or county road signs can be charged with a misdemeanor offense of receiving stolen property.

The department asks that citizens report anyone stealing or attempting to steal road signs to the Graves County Sheriff's Office at 270-247-4501.
