A southern Illinois man was arrested on a charge of theft by deception after a McCracken County business reported more than $3,500 worth of merchandise was purchased with a fraudulent check.
On September 14, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a complaint from Paducah Shooter’s Supply. They determined that 29-year-old Hunter M. Greene of Buncombe allegedly wrote the bad check on September 2.
Detectives learned that most of the merchandise purchased with the check had reportedly been later sold through Facebook Marketplace. Investigators also located and seized one of the crossbows purchased in the transaction at a pawn shop in Marion, Illinois. Investigators said they also connected Greene to a separate case in Marshall County, involving a check written to another outdoor supply business.
On Tuesday, McCracken detectives worked with the Illinois State Police and arrested Greene at his residence in Buncombe on an outstanding McCracken County felony warrant for theft by deception.
Greene was lodged in the Massac County Jail in Illinois, where he awaits extradition to Kentucky to face the outstanding charge.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office reminds residents and businesses that suspected fraudulent transactions should be reported to law enforcement.
