Massac County Schools and Joppa-Maple Grove schools are preparing for in-person classes on Monday.

Administrators have been communicating with students and families about registration, supply lists and the plans that are in place for the start of the school year. In-service days have allowed teachers to get any needed training, prepare their classrooms for kids and make sure safety measures are in place during the pandemic. Registration of students took place over the last week.

The school districts polled parents to learn how they feel about the best methods to educate their children, with 78 percent of parents in Massac County in favor of some kind of in-person learning (about 44 percent preferred all in-person learning, and about 34 percent preferred blended learning).

Two options are available for instruction - in person classes or remote learning. Anyone who chooses remote learning must stay with that plan for the 9-week period.

Massac County students will alternate days of in-person learning and remote learning to reduce crowding in rooms, hallways and common areas. Joppa-Maple Grove students will be in class from 8 am until 2 pm.

The school district has mobile hotspots available for homes that don't have internet access. Those families should contact their school's principal.

Extensive guidelines are in place for anyone who would enter a school building, and plans have also been established in the event that a person with COVID-19 has been in the building. The school districts will coordinate with the Southern Seven Health Department and any state officials if that happens.
