A Sunday morning fire in southern Graves County claimed the life of a man and injured his wife.

The Graves County Sheriff’s Office said the call came in at about 11:20 a.m. Sunday. The home was located off KY 303 near the Tennessee State Line. First responders from the Cuba and Sedalia Fire Departments battled through the storm to get there, but the home was reportedly a total loss.

Investigators said that 79-year-old Garvin R. Doran and his wife, 81-year-old Faye Doran, discovered the fire and fled outside. Mr. Doran then is said to have gone back into the house, but did not make it back out. Mrs. Doran was taken to Jackson Purchase Medical Center, then transferred to Vanderbilt for treatment.

About 45 minutes after the initial call, firefighters, along with deputies and the Graves County Coroner, located Mr. Doran inside the home.

The investigation into the fire is underway.
