Calloway County Sheriff Nicky Knight is alerting residents to reason why they may not have received their tax bills.
In a post to the Sheriff's Office Facebook page Knight said they have received a number of returned tax bills that were recently mailed.
They said the primary reason may be if someone purchased property during the current tax year and the name on the property does not match the mailing address, the U.S. Postal Service may refuse to deliver the tax bill.
The problem this issue presents is it could result in delays, possibly affecting eligibility for the early payment discount and incurring late penalties.
Knight is telling residents that have not or do not receive tax bill within the next few days to contact their local post office to see if the bill is still in transit or has been returned. Then residents are asked to contact the Sheriff's Office to verify whether the bill has been returned to them.
Knight said they are issuing this notice to help ensure all eligible taxpayers receive their bills in time to take advantage of the early payment discount and to avoid penalties for late or unpaid taxes.
