Mayfield Middle Students Celebrate Arbor Day

Mayfield Electric & Water Systems recently hosted a tree-planting event at Mayfield Middle School in support of National Safe-Digging Month and Arbor Day. MEWS Representative Mary Beth Paschall preceded the tree planting with a safe-digging presentation aimed to educate students on the importance of planting trees away from power lines and being aware of utility right-of-ways .

Mrs. Heather Burgess' Science Enrichment class at MMS researched how tall the donated tree would be at maturity; using this information, the class was able to decide how far from the utility lines the tree should be planted.

The students then located the different colored spray paint that marked underground utility lines. Knowing this information, they then chose an area in the school lawn they would like to plant the tree.
