West Kentucky Community and Technical College has successfully raised the $2.5 million it needs to begin construction of the latest addition to its Paducah School of Art and Design.

The new facility will occupy the old Kitchens, Inc. Building in Lowertown, and will provide more than 29,000 square feet of space for 2-dimensional design, painting, drawing, graphic design, and digital photography. The newly renovated facility will also include offices and a cafe.

WKCTC President Dr. Barbara Veazey announced Friday afternoon that the school has met its goal for the project, thanks to a recent $400,000 donation from the Carson-Myre Charitable Foundation. "We are here to give a huge thank you to the Carson-Myre Charitable Trust Foundation Gift," Veazey said. "That gift will take us to our total of $2.5 million."

The money raised by the school assures they will receive another $7.5 million in state bonds, bringing the total project funding to $10 million. Veazey said work on the new facility could begin as early as October.

The PSAD was opened in 2008 with the goal of being a world-class art school. Since then, WKCTC has opened two other facilities. The 6,700 square foot Madison Hall building was purchased in 2011, and was renovated to include classrooms, office space, ceramics and a jewelry and metals program. The school opened an adjacent 7,000 square foot building earlier this month that includes studios for clay, wood working, welding and metal fabrication.

Renovations of the Kitchens, Inc. building are set to be completed by early 2016.
